I forgot to mention that "Ctrl+." is identical to ".", so in a sense the issue can be avoided if one retrains ones fingers to always use the Ctrl version. It still doesn't mean the text selection thing is well implemented. It should at least beep if the initial string doesn't correspond to any folder.
