I hadn't considered defining a new label since I wasn't aware that messages can have multiple labels. My selection criterion would be "Labelled TODO OR Labelled IMPORTANT OR Status IsNot Read" -> apply label Interesting). Thanks for the idea. All the same, it's not quite right a) because of the need to reapply filters manually, and b) because a filter apparently can't *remove* a label.
