I had the same problem with yahoo mail messages.
workaround:

- press Enter key 2 x, to make some space
- copy only the sentence(s) or the paragraph, in the "square" delimited
yahoo email, you need to past in-line.
- past it in the space you have made by right-clicking and using "Past
quotation": you have the in-line grayed text with blue quotations
- type your answer as usuall
- repeat the above with the remaining sentences or paragraphs you need
in-line.
this copying pasting is a bit time consuming, but you'll get-by quickly.
