Isn't that what the "magic space bar" does? http://library.gnome.org/users/evolution/3.1/usage-mail-getnsend-read.html.en Also Ctrl-] goes to the next unread message in any view - or when focused on the list pane a '.' or ']'. Also, if you sort by date, the position of the thread in the list is determined by the date of the last message, so if you get a new message in an old thread, the thread will be displayed at bottom.
