By 'retrieve' do you mean get the messages from a server or just access
the messages?

If it is an MBOX you can Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Accounts -> Add ...
and create a standand mbox spool file / directory and point it to where
the old mailbox data is.  Then you should be able to access the mailbox
and move the messages.
