If Thunderbird actually uses MBOX (which seems doubtful).... then that
might be why.  MBOX gets slow with very large mailboxes; it is a *flaw*
in the design of MBOX.  MBOX is fundamentally at odds with large
mailboxes.  

I'd say it is just time to move on.  There are lots of tools for using
maildir just as easily as using MBOX.

... and why are you grousing about underneath Evolution anyway?  If you
really want to do that I'd recommend storing mail in an IMAP server.
