Not running GNOME 3 doesn't change the fact that Gtk also changed from 2 to 3, and several other dependencies. Numerous distributions package that change poorly [or did, time moves on]. GNOME 3.8.1, and Evolution, on openSUSE 3.8.1 is extremely stable.
