Check on things like loading images from the net - there are three settings and for testing it is probably best to set it to not load any images from the net. The other two settings can cause things to grind to a halt - not only from trying to retrieve images, but also trying to retrieve contact details if you have it set to only retrieving images for known contacts. > > Also Evolution seems to take a while to open, 10 to 15 seconds. You should run Evo from the command line to see if any errors are being reported. If there is nothing obvious there, try following some of the debugging tips at https://projects.gnome.org/evolution/bugs.shtml > > I do have a large amount of email stored. Possibly create a new local account within Evo - you'll have to setup the Maildir format within a new directory - i.e. something like mkdir ~/MailArchive cd ~/MailArchive mkdir tmp cur new then in Edit -> Preferences add a new account of type "Maildir-format mail directories" and point the "Mail Directory" to ~/MailArchive. You will get a new folder tree in the left hand pane and you can then move mail from your standard folders into that account. Once you have archived everything, disable that account in Preferences and Evolution will not see your archived things. Whenever you want to retrieve anything, just re-enable the account in Preferences.
