I believe the ANNOTATE extension is quite widely supported at this
point.  Dovecot and Cyrus IMAPd [probably the two most significant IMAP
servers] both support it.

Cyrus has supported ANNOTATE since 2.1.18 at least [that is February
2005].  Current versions of Cyrus are 2.4.x, with 2.3.x being
deprecated.   Anyone running pre-2.3.x is crazy.

For Dovecot I believe you need a very current version.
