I remember that years ago there were issues with the cache. Perhaps moving ~/.cache/evolution/ to ~/.cache/evolution.BAK/ is worth to be tested. But indeed, more likely is a permission issue. After running some GUI editors with root privileges, the file(s) the user needs to access could have wrong permissions.
