One is a label, the other is a flag.

It's an unfortunate coincidence that both are named the same. They are
completely different.


Labels: Important is a label you can set, just like Work and Private.
Messages with a label will have a different color in the thread list.
You can set it from the Label submenu of the contextual one.


Important: This is the "Flagged" property in IMAP. Some emails may
receive it from the user who sent it (Prioritize message). In the
contextual menu it's the «Mark as Important» entry. In the thread list,
you see a red exclamation mark within a circle « !⃝ » at the side (your
theme may modify the icon).
