Thank you.  

I hadn't gone into that part of preferences for a long time, years, and
had never seen the options before or I would have tried them.  I had to
use base to get wireless to work.  If I start evolution from a bash
prompt it still throws the error but at least it works.  It was set to
default, whatever that is in Devuan using XFCE4.  

I really appreciate your help.
