Thanks Milan.  I should have been clearer, apologies; there was no
source of that name in ~/.config/evolution/sources/ and nor was there
any reference in the menu items to an unused mail account that seemed
to relate to the unsuccessful POP3 account.  I wonder if something
might have gone wrong during the deletion of that account?
I have now entirely deleted the directories with the affected name and
the system continues to work well.  So far I'm very pleased with it!
