Hmm.  

I know I have had this problem before as well and It was because RPM was
mucking up my rpm db.  It seems like the problem only existed with rpm
4, but I may be incorrect.  

I also cured this once by rpm --rebuilddb.  You *might* also try
checking your system for any packages which are missing dependancies:

rpm -Va (i think)

I think I heard somewhere that that can cause problems as well.
