You pray that the Trash folder will stop being a vFolder soon.
Either that or never use the delete function; instead drag messages to
be deleted to your own folder ("Rubbish"?) which you can then manage and
expunge as a real folder.
But there is no automated way of doing this. You may be able to set up
a filter (Delete [move to Trash vFolder] messages > 30 days old, not
labeled "Later" etc.) to do this somewhat automatically.
