It may not be relevant, but when I start evolution 1.4 in a shell, I get the following message repeated twice :-
<memory>:1: Invalid color constant '# 0 0 0'
Gtk-Message: /export/home/phands/evolution/gtkrc-mail-fonts:2: failed to retrieve property `GtkHTML::spell-error-color' of type `GdkColor' from rc file value ""# 0 0 0"" of type `gchararray'
However, for me, spell checking works normally - I get a red wavy line. I am also able to change it to another colour. It's on SuSE 8.2.
