I have one possible idea ... There looks like there's a bug in the mailbox summary code that stores the folder size as a 32 bit int on disk, but a size_t in memory. That could lead to odd things happening, but on the other hand it should just recover itself automagically too. And another bug i see, the code to write out off_t's and time_t's doesn't use a self-describing compressed format like the code to write out 32 bit ints (different from the one above which is fixed-size for the header), so they could also cause problems.
