Hm, that's really strange. The minicard view does have a lot of performance issues but I worked to eliminate a few of them (the fact that it generates a full relayout whenever you insert a card into the model was the biggest one) for 1.4. It's still a lot slower than the e-table view, but the difference isn't that noticeable until you start loading huge numbers of contacts (like over 10k). At least, not for me. Which version of 1.4 are you running?
