Yep, autocompletion is triggered at 2 chars (maybe 3 chars, not sure
anymore on that version) and works for the first and last name, nickname
and email address.
IIRC all Contacts folders to trigger autocompletion have to be enabled
for that. As I don't have a 1.2.x version handy, here is where it is in
1.4.x versions:
Tools / Settings / Folder Settings / Autocompletion Folders
It should be similar in 1.2.x versions. HTH
