Actually, I have unchecked the "check for new messages in all folders"
checkbox and it seems to be a bit snappier.  There are still times when
it's slow, but it seems to at least be tolerable more often now.

And as for going against the maildirs directly, I hadn't thought of
that.  =:)  Actually, this is an experiment, as I've never played with
IMAP before.  Also, I was hoping that it would be less of a hassle
if/when I decide to play with kmail/kontact/kolab, or if I'm forced (by
employers) to use LookOut.
