Mail, contacts, and calendars (and tasks) will not be disturbed by an upgrade. Filters/vfolders and other settings should be upgraded automatically - the old settings will also remain intact (some are renamed with the old version number, e.g. filters/vfolders/searches, some are now in gconf instead of config.xmldb). A couple of minor settings aren't upgraded (like which folders are threaded i think).
