the news aggregation can be done with straw, a gnome program for that.
The weather stuff will be done by the weather calendar backend.

Actually, I was rather more concerned about mail, calendar, and tasks summaries. Are they remaining and if so, are the bugs worked out? If not, what replaces that functionality?
