Does the spec tell you to display an email if you click on it? No, but this is conventional email client behavior. If you literally implement only what is in the spec, I don't know what you'd have but it is certain that nobody could use it.
Similarly, not showing dotfiles is an IMAP client convention. People expect it, and your client is for people, afterall.
