The newline, too, comes from gethostbyaddr_r() (hostent->h_name contains the '\n') which is a bug in glibc.
the workaround which has been mentioned on this list hundreds of times and is also in the FAQ is to remove all empty lines and all comments from /etc/hosts
we also hacked in a work-around for this problem in the upcoming 1.4.6 (that I *think* works, but I have no real way of testing since I was never able to reproduce this)

The above log is after I removed and grep for smtp.plansys.com in the settings directories. The blank line causes postfix to send the 500 message.
