In maildir format you could, although you're going to get probably a lot
of read-only errors in some places.  I could imagine some fairly simple
patches to get rid of these though.

In mailbox format, you probably could too, if you backup everything, and
the dates are retained.

I'm sure you could experiment (i might even try some cd-rw tests if i
get bored).
