Thanks.  gdk-pixbuf is installed but I did a force-reinstall 
just-in-case.  Same problem.  As for the loaders I'm completely in the 
dark.  Got a light?

Btw:  Evolution does appear, but with no button images and no toolbar 
images.  Also the /opt/gnome/share/evolution/1.4/images/ directory 
appears to be fully populated and accessible (I *can* load the 
splash.png into gimp just fine).
