Good luck. I don't use Gnome, but I did a minimal install of it
because a lot of things just didn't work correctly. There proably is
some way to get everything right, get gnome-control-center installed
without the rest of Gnome, etc., but for the price a little disk space I
didn't waste the time figuring it out. Just do a minimal install of
Gnome, and don't use it for your desktop.
I use KDE on Mandrake, and taking the above approach is working very
well.
Maybe one of the Gnome gurus on the list could explain how to get
gnome-control-center running without the rest of Gnome, but that was
just a waste of time for me to bother with.
