you're right about the clashes, and I definitely DON'T want that. Conceptually i was struggling with the imap server not sharing the folders. It was, but because the default evolution behavior us to only show subscribed folders, I didn't realize that. After futzing with the Mac client, I realized that subscriptions would be the way to go, and now I know how to set it up properly.
Next I'm going to try to tackle adding procmail and spamassassin to the mix. If I get this all tuned, I'll write a howto so that others don't waste time on this list and others trying to figure out something similar. Thanks for the help!
