I use a combination of RedCarpet 2.x and apt-get (wonderful stuff--see http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/FAQ.php#B2) for almost all my package management with RH9, and have had no problems. Note that to use Red Carpet there is no need (or reason, that I can fathom) to install Ximian Desktop 2. That WILL send you into dependency hell, from my experience, and I didn't like the way it looked anyway. Note that I don't think Red Carpet (Ximian) has any support for Fedora, so it's no wonder that the FC2 Release Notes say not to use it to try and install RH9 packages or whatever. And one last thing: if you're installing RPMs "by hand", once you're sure you've got everything you need to satisfy the dependencies, put ALL the RPM filenames on the same line after "rpm -Uvh" and RPM will install them in the required order (same thing happens if you use "*.rpm", but I don't recommend that if you have any unrelated RPMs in the same directory!).
