Don't know for sure if this is related or what you are looking for but
this is what I had to do in evolution to get spelling to work. Like
yourself I had all packages installed but I could not get spell checking
to work.

As it states this is not a fix as you can not add any 'user defined'
words (hangs the entire system hard) but it will do basic spell
checking.
