i finally discovered the root of my kerberos problems...the exchange
account settings would not save w/plaintext set at the auth type.  it
always reverted back to secure.  more info is here:

i had to edit ~/.gconf/apps/evolution/mail/%gconf.xml

i feel kinda stupid chasing the kerberos problem for so long, only to
find out what the real problem was...

hopefully, this will help someone in the future.
