How STUPIDLY simple.  I feel a real dork not to see that :-(

On the other hand, while I take my hat off to the developers of an
excellent application, what a sad and twisted piece of UI programming to
torture new users with a _feature_ like that! :-(

Now I've got it set with all my old appointments visible (from when I
did the import from Evo 1.0.8) and the year view in another pane - and
NO more error message.  So, maybe the lack of error message is due to me
changing the integer value of
the /apps/evolution/calendar/display/month_hpane_position to a value
<320000 on Lonnie's advice previously.  Guess who's a happy camper now?
