might be able to fix it by re-creating the account.
or if not, editing the account details in gconf, there will be some url like nntp://@host/ - remove the empty user, i.e. rmeove the "@".

Yes, IIRC this was a bug where an invalid URL was passed with "" as the username and/or passwd. It's fixed in 2.2, FWIW.
