Thank you very much for your reply, before I dash off to figure out how to get a back trace, I need to add the following. For clarification evolution is now not freezing, I can click create new contact and nothing happens. Also if I have the preview pane open in mail view after a while (not quite sure what triggers it) the status bar at the bottom of the screen reports "Formatting Message....." and never gets any further - once this happens the only way to stop evolution is to end it forcibly xkill, ctrl-alt-backspace. I have also experimented with changing to using a more standardised locale LANG="C" LC_ALL="C" in lieu of en_NZ.iso88591 Didnt apparently help. I have checked and evolution (or is it e-d-s) recreates ~/.evolution/addressbook/local/system/addressbook.db on startup if it is missing. I am also seeing the following in a terminal when I switch from the addressbook to the mail in the evolution shell. Can anyone shed any light on the meaning of the following? (evolution-2.2:4839): eab-widgets-CRITICAL **: eab_view_discard_menus: assertion `view->view_instance' failed Off to google for back tracing ....
