I think a cool way to implement that would be to allow
the user to run an arbitrary command as a filter action.
Then I could do stuff like:

- Play a sound when new mail arrives
- Play a sound when mail matches a certain filter
(to avoid noise from mailing list messages and spam)
- Play different sounds for different messages
- Notify an applet when mail matches a filter.
- Save a message to a folder, then run an application
using that folder as data (to generate automated replies, etc).
- Handle tons of other obscure features that only one in a
  thousand people will ask for.

If you find that lots of people use the same application,
like playing a sound, then it could be added to the program
as a standard action.

How does this sound? Could it be secure if not abused?
