FWIW, I'm also running on Mandrake 8.1.  I updated the packages below
with the latest cooker packages.  The english cooker page is:

Now spell checking is working very well for me (thanks Fredric!).

On my system, "rpm -qa | fgrep spell" returns:
ispell-3.1.20-17mdk
gnome-spell-0.4-2mdk
libpspell4-devel-0.12.2-2mdk
libpspell4-0.12.2-3mdk
pspell-0.12.2-3mdk
aspell-0.33.7.1-2mdk
