If 'telnet smtpserver 25' fails when you run it from the linux box, then it sounds like the intenet sharing, or whatever it is, isnt' sharing everything.
Try also runnign evolution-mail with CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 set in your environment, and sending us the debug output.
