I believe the main advantages to maildir are speed.  The maildir
format is *much* faster than mbox for big mailboxes. I'm thinking of
switching over for that reason (I IMAP to my mail-server, a feeble
200Mhz machine, and it is slow answering STATUS requests).

I'd love a good answer to that question.  It's the major reason I
haven't already switched.  My brief look around discovered a few
hacked-together tools, but nothing which filled me with confidence.
