Actually I wanted to get around installing the SOCKS client (btw, is
there somewhere a downloadable rpm of the recent version? I don't want
to compile the source package from nec just for that).

The problem with using a SOCKS proxy client came up because the firewall
is not defined as gateway in our network setup (security reasons).And it
also blocks DNS queries that are not forwarded via a firewall (SOCKS)
client.
