There's always been a fine line between NNTP/newsgroups and SMTP/mailing lists, hasn't there? I think mailing lists began to eclipse newsgroups when it began to be common practice to archive mailing lists as lists also have features (admins, no posting except from members) which tend to keep the signal-to-noise ratio fairly high ... a thing that Usenet has been lacking in for some time now.
