I guess you're right that the server's broken. However, it seems to
support LITERAL+ for some commands. I telnetted to the server and did this:
* OK IMAP4 Ready iproxy1.acs.ucalgary.ca
A0000 CAPABILITY
* CAPABILITY IMAP4 IMAP4REV1 LITERAL+
A0001 LOGIN {5+}
xxxxx {8+}
xxxxxxxx
A0001 OK You are so in
A0003 LIST {2+}
A0003 BAD Missing required argument to LIST
A0004 SELECT {5+}
A0004 BAD Missing required argument to SELECT
So it does take LITERAL+ on LOGIN, but not on LIST or SELECT. I'll
figure out what server implementation it is and get back to you.
