I suggest you open a bug in bugzilla and attach some example images. 
The timeout is pretty high, and can't be changed by any settings.

Note that any version prior to 1.1.3 (about to be released) had
significant issues with all remote html image loading, and to be honest,
i'm surprise it ever works acceptably ...
