Do you have a dictionary selected? 

Go to: 

  Tools => 
    Settings => 
      Composer Preferences =>
                Spell Checking

and make sure you have at least one language enabled... also, you might
want to ensure that the:

  "Color for misspelled words" is not "white" ???
