perhaps your NFS server is configured to support locking and his is not.

(ie, nfs.lockd is running)

because 1.0.8 didn't use gconf, it used gnome-config by default. (well,
we are talking about GtkHTML here - since evolution doesn't use gconf,
but bonobo-conf instead - at least up to and including 1.2 - 1.4 is
being modified to use gconf exclusively)
