I've got more information and entered this as bug #35751
(http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=35751).

The new information results from trying the binary Ximian packages
instead. I didn't know how to do this until I read a recent message
sent to this mailing list
(http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/evolution/2002-December/024199.html).

The problem persists but the error messages from wombat and crashes no
longer happen.
