Operations Research Specialist - with IBM ILOG CPLEX, LINDO, or Xpress Location: Houston, TX Position Type: Contract/ Contract to Hire/
Please mention what position you are interested in, if Contract or contract to Hire Job Summary Formulate and apply mathematical modeling and other optimizing methods to develop and interpret information that assists the entire Client's organization with decision-making, policy formulation, or other managerial functions. Additionally the Operations Research Specialist frequently concentrates on collecting and analyzing data and developing decision support software. The Operations Research Specialist will develop and supply analytic support for optimal time, costing, pricing, or logistics networks for evaluation and/or implementation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned. * Formulate mathematical models (linear and non-linear) of problems, relating constants and variables, restrictions, alternatives, conflicting objectives, and their numerical parameters. * Conduct simulation (discrete event) studies of existing and proposed systems, including definition of data requirements; capture and validation of information, model formulation, design experimentation, and application of appropriate statistical analysis. * Observe current systems and processes, interacting with the appropriate personnel. Utilizing a variety of sources, collect and analyze information to support the modeling and analysis. * Collaborate with Client's leadership to identify, define, and solve a variety of problems as well as to support various corporate initiatives. * Design, conduct, and evaluate experimental operational studies in cases where models cannot be developed from existing data. * Work closely with Information Technology team to convert the built Operations Research tool prototypes into production. * Prepare management reports defining the problem; documenting the analysis and recommending courses of action in order to determine the best outcomes. * Develop business methods and procedures, including accounting systems, file systems, office systems, logistics systems, and production schedules. * Develop training curriculums, presentations, methods or materials that inform the internal clients about the data-driven solutions developed for supporting decision making. * Utilize computer programming skills and relational database system to develop optimization applications. * Utilize mathematical programming software packages such as IBM ILOG CPLEX, LINDO, or Xpress; familiarity with algebraic modeling languages such as AMPL or GAMS. Supervisory Responsibilities Minimal supervisory skills are required in this job. This includes: indirect supervision of full-time employees including management and individual contributor positions. Education and Experience Required: Master's degree, or equivalent experience, in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or similar area of study, and five or more years previous experience. Previous supervisory experience is desirable, but not required. Preferred: 5+ years experience in applying several operations research methods like mathematical modeling, optimization modeling, stochastic simulation, probability and statistical analysis, decision analysis, and applied gaming theory. Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required * Demonstrated ability to apply operations research techniques including decision analysis, optimization, simulation and statistical and stochastic modeling. * Significant experience utilizing mathematical programming software packages such as IBM ILOG CPLEX, LINDO, or Xpress. * Demonstrated ability to develop simulation models and conduct studies utilizing commercial simulation software such as Arena, AutoMOD, Witness, etc. * Strong problem solving and analysis skills: ability to identify root causes of problems, create effective practical solution approaches, implement solutions under the tactical demands of business operations. * Programming experience, preferably in C or C#. * Committed and highly motivated team player with strong communication skills. * Demonstrated work and familiarity with data mining and visualization tools. * Experience with working as part of an integrated solutions development team to provide value to systems engineering and development for specific decision support application.
