BHP Billiton planned to start mining at the Maruwai site in Kalimantan in 2008, producing about 5-million tons of coking coal a year, Merrill analysts said.

Global coking coal demand is expected to rise as much as 58% through 2010. BHP Billiton and rival miners are all benefiting from surging steel production led by China.

BHP Billiton is spending $468m expanding its coal mines and plant in Australia and is aiming to produce 100-million tons of coking coal a year by 2010, up from 58-million tons last year.

BHP Billitonâ s management does believe China has changed the demand landscape, Merrillâ s Vicky Binns said. However, future growth is also going to be strong from Brazil and India, who will both probably ramp up steel production due to their own vast iron-ore resources.

Of the $300m to be spent on Maruwai, about half will be spent on mine development, and the remainder on infrastructure.

P. Agung, betul2 nggak punya krn ini punya boss disono. Paling sampulnya doang yg saya punya he..he…

Sejujurnya adalah tidak mungkin untuk menambang Maruwai dalam 1 – 2 tahun ke depan. Mungkin tidak banyak yg tau tetapi masih ada beberapa tahap yang harus dilalui sesuai jadwal PKP2B. Saat ini Maruwai Coal baru pada tahap FS, setelah itu harus melewati Tahap Konstruksi, setelah itu baru masuk Penambangan.
