Subject: RE: Disaster recovery 101 question Exchange 2003

I think once you go into a disaster recovery mode and restore stuff onto
Server B and start using Server B, this will create a bunch of Server
B's
transaction logs and there will be a different continuity. I don't think
you
will then be able to "insert" a series of old transaction logs in there.

After Server A crashes, if you still have access to server A's
transaction
logs, you should then immediately grab them and append them on top of
the
restore that you will be doing to Server B (if you can still access
crashed
Server A'd drives).
This is why it is important to keep transaction logs on a separate RAID1
volume - you could just yank the disk out of Server A, stick it
somewhere
else and read the transaction log files and copy them to Server B.

Also when restoring data onto Server B, you will need to prevent it from
mounting the databases right after the restore, that's because you need
to
manually copy the day's transaction logs from Server A. Look for "Last
backup set" option and for the "Mount after restore" option in your
backup/restore program.

I also have a transaction log question

CONTEXT
====================
I will test the following solution because my customer do not have the
budget for Clustering and I think that solution could work.

a- Clone Server A (Main ex 2003 server) with PowerQuest v2i imaging
software
b- restore that image on Server B (the SOS server while server as is
beeing
repaired) that is simmilar but older Dell Server(good Raid driver
though)
c- restore the last backup of exchange from tape onto that SOS Server B

once the server A is repaired (Physical problem)

d- Backup Exchange on server B (image probably ) or BackUPexec backup of
the
database
e- Restore that iamge on server A (or only the exchange databases and
logs)

We're back in production...
=================
My question, after the server A had Hardware problem, there are
transaction
logs for that day that the server broke. Can those logs be restored
without
any problem even after the server continued working for a while on
server B
for a day or 2 and been restored back on server a ????

THANKS !

Subject: Disaster recovery 101 question Exchange 2003

Hi

We're searching for a cost/effective disaster recovery solution in case
our
Main Ex2003 server HardWare is broken.

We have an Ex 2003 server (member server in a 2000/2003 AD (there is a
2003
DC and two 2000 DC)

We have a spare server (different hardware than the new exchange 2003
server... This is the old 55 server hardware) and were wondering how to
use
it in case our ex2003 server crash.

How could we use that server just in case the Ex 2003 server CRASH ?

I mean, if we join that server to that AD, different servername
(exserver02), how can we use it to Restore very fast Exchange 20003 on
that
server in case the " HARDWARE of the 1st one failed " ?

IF I had the budget, I would do some CLUSTERING (By the book) or a
cheaper
solution would be to clone(create an image with PowerQuest v2i) the
ex2003
server every day and would restore that image on the other
server(identical
hardware) while the 1st one is being repaired. But the other one is an
older machine. From what I know we cannont restore an image on a
different
Server(Hardware)

And If I make second server a member of the Exchange org, and that there
is
not mailboxe on it, if the 1st one crash, the Outlook are linked to the
1st
one

This is the story... How to use that second server in case of a Hardware
failure of the main one, and be up and running very fast.... Instead of
being down may be 2 days (the time to place a service call, order the
parts
and have the tech come at our location )

Thanks a lot....
