On a new installation . I'm trying to get outlook 2003 to find the Exchange
2003 server. When doing a "Check Name", I get a "The name could not be
resolved. The bookmark is not valid."
I can't resolve the server with hostname, FQ name, or IP address. I've
seen nothing in MS KB, or literature about this error.
1 - Windows 2003 GC/DC DNS server
2 - Windows 2003 DC DNS Exchange server
ADC to a NT4/Exchange 5.5 site.
No problems detected with the install and setup.
New user/mailbox created on the Exchange 2003 server. Mailbox can be
accessed with OWA no problem. User apears on Exch5.5's GAL, so I conclude
that the ADC is functioning. WinXP Sp1 - fully patched workstation (that
uses these same DCs and TCP-IP for absolutely every single part of it's
networking life) can't connect to the Exchange server.
Searching the internet seems that other people have come up with this
issue, and we've been following a diverse set of "waving the dead chicken"
suggestions:
I've udated MDAC on all the servers, Looked at DNS multiple times,
Manually discovered the GC, and changed the Windows Domain Controller
entries for "Recipient Update Service". Of course, there's always the
"better reboot all the GC's after this" There _always_ has to be a reboot
of *all* the DCs. Very disruptive.
Of course, most of the responces are incredibly vague and unhelpful
suggestions about how DNS must be "incorrect." Seems that's the pat answer
nowadays. However, when you only have two servers, one zone, one LAN IP
range, and both machines are in the same room with you, this advice gets to
be tiresome. We haven't found any useful suggestions as to what the core of
the problem might be.
I'm incredibly frustrated of the complete inability of 3 of MS's flagship,
brand new, very expensive products to talk to each other in an effective
manner without a call to PSS. :-( , and very worried that there are many
more under-doucmented, under-the-hood settings that have to be set exactly
right for the simplest things to work. And don't even get me started on
Outlook's "We tried something simple to connect. Didn't work. We're done.
It's impossible. You're SOL. Don't ask what was done - it's a secret.
Please hit Cancel 6 or 7 times to exit this procedure. If you want to try
again - don't't - I'm going to continue to insist on using this profile even
though it's a complete failure. You have to manually get rid of it and start
over."
Any advice apreciated.
