Communications between 2003 and 5.5 are still RPC based. And the RPCPing should still work. Can Exchange 5.5 servers successfully resolve and ping the 2003 server (can they resolve both by name and IP address? Can they resolve by the fully qualified domain name?) The 5.5 server tries to do an RPC bindback when another Exchange server tries to connect to it. And if 5.5 server can't perform a DNS resolution for fully qualified domain name of the caller, it will drop the connection. When the 2003 server connects, it supplies its FQDN.
